The 10 Commandments of Gardening

Well it was my first year as a proper gardener this year and as the nights draw in I am reflecting on what I have learnt...........
1. I shall not buy plants from DIY stores
I have found them to sell forced and sickly plants and they are certainly no cheaper than lovely proper garden centres.
2. I shall not sucumb to the temptation of cheap compost
I have discovered that plants do not do well in a pot full of shredded bin liners - doh!
3. I shall not attempt to grow plants from seed
Difficult, hard work, big effort, low pleasure (apart from sunflowers of course)
4. I shall not leave my plants in a hot car
..............not even for 5 mintues whilst I pop to the loo. It seems they don't like it
5. I shall not use too much hydration gel
dad told me you dont need much and he was right - it really does expand!!!
6. I shall not kill my plants for the sake of vanity
I have discovered if a plant is sat looking sad and pathetic in the shade or yellow and withered in the sun it is best to move it rather than crossing your fingers and thinking "oooh but I really do like that pot there - its goes lovely with the green of the shed"
7. Hozelock breeds laziness
Its all very well having an automatic watering system but if you don't have at look at your plants now and again they get eaten
8. I shall talk to my plants
I am not sure that they are bothered if you talk to them but if you don't get down there now and again for a good chat you overlook the various infestations (see above)
9. I shall not use slug pellets
They kill the burdies
10. Sunflowers create happiness
Everybody loves a sunflower - they should be prescribed on the NHS
